e-Spotlight-Adoptee, Jamie Legerski September 2019
Jamie Legerski, a resident of Laramie and wife of retired Cowgirl Women's Basketball Coach, Joe Legerski by Kathy Burman
I recently sat down with Jamie who told me about her childhood growing up with her loving parents and siblings. Jamie and her siblings were adopted at birth and although she was not adopted through the Wyoming Children's Society but through an agency in the Midwest, her story reflects the same values we see in many of WCS adoptive parents and adoptees.
“Being adopted was never a thing for me. I don’t ever remember being told I was adopted, I just always knew,” stated Jamie Legerski of Laramie, Wyoming.
Jamie credits her adoptive parents for making sure she was told often how much her birthmother loved her and that she wanted her to have a better life. A very full life her birthmother knew she was unable to provide Jamie, but knew her adoptive parents could. Her adoptive mom knew this kind of reassurance was important for her daughter’s confidence and self-esteem as she grew up and might question why her birthmother made that decision. This gift of self assurance, Jamie has modeled throughout her life; qualities she knows she and her husband have passed on to their own children. (Not to mention a good dose of competitiveness!)
Because Jamie felt good about being adopted throughout her life, she never felt the need to find her birth parents. She was at peace with who she was. Really the only missing piece for her was the need to know her ethnic background. Therefore, she meandered down the Ancestry DNA road and not only did she find out she is part Native American, Hispanic and French, she found her birthfather and birth siblings. Jamie had connected with her birthmother a few years back through the adoption agency and mutual consent.
“It’s been a really interesting journey. I didn’t set out to meet my birth relatives, but I have already met my birthmother and siblings on my mother’s side and have corresponded with my siblings on my birthfather’s side,” stated Jamie.
She is glad she has met them all but is most appreciative with how her own parents dealt with teaching her about being adopting. “My parents were incredible and I owe them everything.”
